At Thursday’s meeting, the College Station city council passed an ordinance that prohibits the sale of non-rescue dogs and cats in pet stores. The pets now must be obtained from a city or county animal shelter or rescue organization.
College Station is the eighth city in Texas to pass a similar pet store ordinance along with Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth, The Colony, El Paso, and Waco.
College Station does not currently have a pet shop in operation. The former “Puppy Station” located in the Post Oak Mall closed in 2019.
The City Council voted seven (7) for and none (0) opposed.
