A Democrat congressman from South Texas wrote a letter to Vice President Kamala Harris urging her to make a trip to the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I write to invite you to the U.S. Southern Border to observe the ongoing humanitarian crisis and share the perspective of Americans who live there,” Rep. Henry Cuellar wrote in the invitation. “I encourage you to join me and other Members of Congress, while we visit with the people on the ground who deal with these issues every day.”

Cuellar’s call for action comes as the “rapid rise in the number of migrants arriving at the U.S. Southern Border has placed severe burdens on our communities.” Now, Cuellar is pleading for President Joe Biden’s border lead to use him as a “resource” to create “effective policies” and help his community.

“The situation on the border will only worsen, as more migrants are expected to arrive. The Administration needs to take a proactive approach to create a sustainable system of humanitarian aid and relieve everyday Americans of that responsibility,” Cuellar concluded.

Harris also defended her refusal to visit the U.S.-Mexico border and the people attempting to manage it nearly six months into the humanitarian crisis by comparing it to her lack of presence in Europe.

“You haven’t been to the border,” NBC’s Lester Holt noted.

“I haven’t been to Europe,” Harris said, shrugging off the question. “And I
