An explosion erupted outside the Abbey gate at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan, the Pentagon said Thursday morning.

Gunfire is also reportedly being exchanged by forces on the ground, although the affiliations and identities are still unknown.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said the number of casualties remained unclear.

The assault was reportedly perpetrated by a suicide bomber armed with an improvised explosive device. A firefight followed the detonation, a U.S. official told Fox News’s Jennifer Griffin.

A second explosion occurred shortly after outside the Barron Hotel, where Afghans and Americans have gathered while awaiting evacuation, Griffin reported.
